Raw Silver Nugget

I got out for a few hours yesterday and at about four inches this thing came out of the dirt. It gave a very high & clear repeating tone even in "disc" mode. After soak cleaning it I scratched it in a few spots with a pocket knife. Some googling revealed that silver can on occasion be found in raw form separate from other rock formations. At first I thought I had a piece of melted can slaw, but now I'm not so sure....

Hard to say. Get it tested. If you don’t have a test kit most pawn shops probably do.

Looks like a melted piece of metal. I hit small pieces of metal occasionally that register high, but not silver. I hope yours is. Let us know if you find out.

Silver and gold testing kits are inexpensive. If silver has been found, (previously), in your area, you may want to keep a lid on it.

I tried a simple home test with sulfur based wooden matches. You scratch an area of the metal and then let the heat do its work. If it's silver this causes the exposed area to turn black. It did turn black on a .925 silver ring, but not on my recent find. The lessons here are two-fold: The match test for silver is reliable & sometimes our machines are not....

Could be a ring that a mower chewed like a pice of gum If it is a silver nugget I would become a miner 49er I dont know what the 49er means but it sounded pretty good so I tossed it in. lol. Tommy

Tommy,
A Miner 49er is a reference to a person who took part in the 1849 Gold Rush.
