I got home about a half hour before sunset yesterday and detected my front yard for a few minutes. Found a couple of wheats - maybe my first silver is waiting for me right here at home.
Nice! You never know. My youngest daughter found a sterling ring in our back yard!

What would cause the one penny (I’m assuming it’s a penny) to oxidize like that?

Haven't seen one that bad but usually something the soil. If it had been a farm field with fertilizer, the coins can get chewed up. Mineralization can corrode copper. One area I hunt was an old neighborhood that was bulldozed. Wheats come out matte surfaced and brick red in color. Clad comes out toasted.

The corroded one is likely a Zincoln, 1982 and later.
