Oldest coin/oldest silver in the Netherlands! (Long post...again)

Another work trip, another chance to bring the Equinox 800 for an adventure. Got to spend some time in Amsterdam and thanks to my awesome driver was able to secure permission from a local farmer to roam around his pasture. The kicker, the bit of land was “fertilized” with mud dredged out of the hundreds of Amsterdam canals (according to the farmer). Beautiful weather and beautiful easy to dig soil. Here are some highlights from a cumulative 15 hours of detecting;

Rijderschelling city of Zutphen (6 Stuiver)- 1688

Rijderschelling city of Stad Groningen (6 Stuiver) -1691

Both of these guys came out of the same hole, stuck together so tight I thought it was a single coin at first. According to my research these guys are apx 580/1000 silver and 420/1000 copper.


A nice silver 1926 10 Cent Queen Wilhelmina coin.


Stad Utrecht (1 Duit) etc


Musket Balls (.5in, .69in and .86in)


A few “jewelry?” pieces. The ring appears to be aluminum (a bit to light to be silver). The land was almost entirely devout of anything modern, so I’m hoping the ring dates in the same time frame as some of the coins. Any input on age would be appreciated.


A handful of Lead Bag Seals (some have visible writing on them but I have not tried attributing them yet)


Several buckles...to all the buckle experts I would appreciate any info on the date range for these guys!

Nothing wrong with staying local. I travel because of my work and at times don’t see the family half the year...too much of anything isn’t good either! Thank you for your post.

Locke, wow, definitely a hunt to remember. Those old silvers are amazing as well as those buckles - I particularly enjoy pulling out old buckles. The “what’s its” across and above the musket balls looks like a tobacco packer for a pipe. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

It’s definitely a chunker, and does have a bullet like shape...I was thinking perhaps a scale weight of some sorts as well.

The ring had me going for a bit, it's copying an early medieval style.

All the buckles are 19th C horse harness types.

The brass what is it, is a broken clothes hook. The rolled up bit of lead, is just that, use unknown. (although most likely just stored until they needed to melt it) Common find in the UK, I dig tons of rolled lead of all shapes & sizes.

Great hunt Locke! These fields fertilized with mud out of canals, latrines and moats is the second best thing after digging roman sites. Almost everything can turn up there.

It was a very unique dig for sure, and surprisingly the ground was devoid of any modern “euro” era coins etc...the youngest coin I pulled out was a 1926 10 Cent. It’s a dream to make it into the Northern Netherlands regions to get closer to Roman sites!
