Decided to take another shot at finding an 1862 dot in the park woods. What is interesting about this dot is that it disappears on the 1872 map and the aerials in the 1900’s show nothing but woods. I had tried a couple of times with my old detector with nothing but an occasional shotgun shell head stamp.

Today I wandered in the same area and got 2 quick cuff flat buttons and a partial big tombac button. These were really small 11-12 signals with the Nox.

A couple big rifle casings and head stamps, then a really nice deep 21-21 signal. This is often a 2 piece button or a zincoln.

Thought cool, big dandy button. I have only dug a few of them in my area. Did the Hoover Boys “please be a GW...” chant and popped some dirt off.

Ok, can’t be.... time to send some shaky pics to Steve...

I don’t have a toothbrush on me and it’s starting to dry out so I pack it in dirt and hike back to my car.

Quick call to Steve to game plan next step. Should I... use mineral oil to keep from drying out, just toothbrush, use Renn wax, etc. Decided to pluck it out o the clod, toothbrush the dirt away and while I was still a little winded nose grease it up before it dries out too much... stressful moments.

There is a lot of gilt on the back and in the engraved front areas. Seems to have stabilized here. Thoughts on lemon juice to clean up gilt or next step?????

Wow, still shaking. Good luck out there!

Thx! I told my wife it was probably my most valuable find, but if I tell her it could be worth 5-10k she will sell it in a heartbeat...

Late to this thread, but congrats all the same. I don't think you needed any help with all banner votes. The button has tremendous eye appeal in the contrast of naturally occurring patina and remaining gold gilt - a hard to find formula for a button or coin. Yes, the significant value of a find like yours always stirs up some interest from a spouse. I call my best finds a "two questions find" that I get from my wife when she knows I have something exceptional. "How much is it worth, and when are we selling it?" As you might expect, I'm a bit vague in my response. :dontknow:

Thx! Actually you nailed it on the head, my wife asked the exact questions. These 2 will be a challenge. The value could move them beyond sticking in a showcase in my extra bedroom with all the other finds. Sort of like what would you do if you truly found a treasure chest of gold coins, just hold onto them for your own enjoyment or sell for $$ for the family. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer, but I’m enjoying sharing them for now. If I could just find a couple more at this site... we’ll see.

well Done, you must be over the moon, your an inspiration to us all, to keep going, I wouldn't clean it any further, lemon juice is very harsh on copper and turns it burnt and pinky, only good diluted on gilding
