It’s been 2 months of sweating out my dry holes, but Lady Luck shined a little something on me today a 2 1/2 token. And believe you me I’m grateful. 58039731690__C654FCD6-97FE-4C62-A7F4-44B64F046C3B.jpg 58039734625__D13A7D06-6BB2-41C7-BEDF-4F954B752C47.jpg

Looks an awful lot like the case of a 40mm grenade munition. Simple rim no recess for extractor. Less Lethal rounds like CS gas barricade busters and rubber ball grenades come in such lengths. Most of ours are aluminum or lacquered steel. If It’s near 40mm in diameter, thats what it is.

The base of that shell seems to have the manufacturer's name stamped around the edge, along with the numbers " 2 94" stamped separately.
A lot of military ammo had the dates of manufacture stamped on the bases, so I'd bet those numbers are the date of manufacture- February 1894
It's pretty large, so could be a small bore cannon casing or a shell for a "market gun"

40mm is considered a “destructive device” by the powers that be. AKA- grenade launcher. They have been around since the 1920s. -Often single shot “thumpers” like the Vietnam era M79, they are still used today. Most often domestically with flares, tear gas, or riot control ammo, and overseas with HE anti-personal grenades. You can buy a wide array of very similar launchers that are 37mm instead of 40mm. 37mm is recognized as a safety and distress signal launcher, while 40 is a grenade. Go figure. Very cool- odd find!
