I never get bored hunting my yard when I have a bit of extra time, and am always surprised at what turns up even after exploring much of the land. Thinking it was another gunshot shell I was happy to be wrong and dig an Indian head penny. I learned there were 3 different versions minted in that year. I don’t know which version this is..copper-nickel or bronze and it does not look like there is an ”L” inscribed. It weighs 2.85 grams. I used toothpicks and Andres pencils to clean it, otherwise it looked like a gob of dirt. Glad to share my story with folks who are interested!

What? Did you ever watch “The Wizard of Oz”? Click your digger and pinpointer together three times and say....”There’s no place like home.” LOL Happy hunting!

Thanks, Jeff. I know purists would frown on the cleaning, but an unreadable coin holds no joy for me. I am happy with the results. Happy hunting!

A metal detectorist's dream, to live on a property, that yields that kind of good stuff...! :icon_thumright:
The coin might be copper, with the tints of green...?

In 1864 there were 3 varieties of Indian Head Cents. One was made of copper nickel (weighed 4.67 grams). There were 2 bronze varieties one with L on lower ribbon behind the neck and one without L both weighing 3.11 grams. The one with L had a pointed tip of bust while without L had a round tip of bust. This one looks to me like the round bust variety (no L) and I would say bronze. Still a nice find overall.

well done Kim! Congrats on your saves! I think the same way about unreadable coins. Unfortunately many coins are ruined as the farmers use lots of manure as fertilizers in Germany. I have a huge graveyard full of unreadable coins which won't clean as the material itself is hurt badly.

Thank you, “Horst”. I have been to your beautiful country. It is a shame how many items get ruined by their stay in the ground! HH
