On our vacation, I did 4 hunts in the UK. Hunt 1 was on a farm in Brampton, UK. High hopes for this one but it was slim pickins for the approximate 100 detectorists attending this charity rally. 1200 pounds were raised for a local school. Best finds for me: 3 buttons and a round ball. The two-hole button was made in Ulverston in Lancashire, about 80 miles south of where I dug it; likely made for clothing tailored by Thomas Mashiter around 1870.

Next 3 hunts (on consecutive evenings) were at a townfield in the city where we stayed. Since there was daylight until 10PM, these hunts were done from 8:30 to 10 PM. Best of the first night: 1806/1807 George III halfpenny, George V silver sixpence 1927, 1966 ship's halfpenny, and a 1967 Elizabeth II penny.

Best of 2nd night: 1799 George III halfpenny, and a 1938 George V penny.

Best of 3rd night: round ball, flat button with cloth and thread attached, and a Road Operators' Safety Council medal (ca. 1965), issued to bus and coach drivers enrolled in the council. I only covered a small section of this townfield.

This is a typical reflection of finds in most average fields found by most UK detectorist.
I never do well on Rallies, it's a blind hunt with only your nose to help you.
It demonstrates very well, that it's not as simple as coming over here & getting ancient finds in every field. Research is this key, very much like fishing, fish where the big fish are.
I hope you enjoyed your trip & your finds, & I hope next time you hit it big.

Thanks Crusader! The rally was held by the Lune Valley Metal Detecting group. About half of the detectorists that came, left after the 1:00 PM and these guys looked experienced; it seemed they were able to sniff out a "rubbish" hunt. I was the last man off the fields at 5:00 PM and the organizer, John Ferguson, was apologetic for the results. I thanked him for the effort; it really was well organized and worth the 10 pound entry fee.

Had I more time to detect the townfield I do believe I could have pulled some other Georgian coins.

Great looking finds. Glad to hear you were able to swing for a few days while on the other side of the Atlantic. Hope you had a nice trip and I can't wait to hear about it.

Nice amount of saves McCDig. Congrats. I’m sure it feels even better knowing that it was for a good cause.

I'd be thrilled pulling those bits of treasure! Over this way, 1799 and 1807/07 ARE ancient finds! :laughing7:

Congrats mate! :skullflag: :occasion14:

Thanks Jamie. So there are two bullets, four buttons, and two older coins for the Board this month.

Thanks Hawks88! You're right about that. The school and it's chapel building were damaged in the 2015 floods. I understand the donation is going toward rebild of the chapel.

Thanks Javadroid! It was amazing to be pulling mid-20th century coins and every now and then an old copper would pop up. The 1799 and the 1806/1807 half penny ids are from the obverse and reverse design features unique to those years, dates are not visible. Thankfully the older coppers hold up to this soil that seems much more acidic than at home in Maryland.

Thanks Don! Two of our cab drivers detect and one told me he will be heading to Scotland on a vacation to look for the Jacobite gold.

exciting stuff for people like us, just the chance of finding something older than what we can normally find here is way cool. awesome experience

Thanks Randy. I had my eye on the townfield. After the first half penny I was hooked.

Thanks dirtlooter! It was a challenge to pack my shovel but a got it to fit in a duffel bag that met the dimensional limits imposed on a checked bag. Predator Tool shovels are light but strong.

Funny, when I first saw your finds I thought you were detecting one of my sites here in Canada. :laughing7:
Kudos to you for helping to raise money for charity through detecting too.

I love finding 'holed' coins, I think that makes them a much more personal find.
