Yesterday, I went out for an hour with awdw. The mosquitos were unbearable, and that's saying something, because we're used them being pretty intense. Anyway, I was excited to find a knee buckle (I think), with a clump of rust in the middle.

I didn't take a photo before I started cleaning. The first pic is after my first pass with a toothpick. After that, I went at it with a combination of approaches and took it as far as I am comfortable going.

The cool thing is that it is complete - a first for me, and probably a rare find in the harsh environment of the SC Lowcountry.

Thanks for looking. IMG_9478.jpg

Nice. I never find one with any trace of the iron innards. By the style Id say thats 1790ish

toasted - it's the same thing down here. You might find one with a trace of rust, but not with any iron intact. This spot is on a high sandy hill, and I spent a long time applying naval jelly directly to the rust, and then, picking it away as it softened.

Thanks, Dale!
I had to be stuck at home yesterday, so I just really took my time on it. I think I have a system now, and hopefully I'll be able to use it on some future finds.

Great LS on the find and recovery! Probably one of those, crazy, wild hog hunts through the low country!

Knee and shoe buckles are excellent finds. I don't think I've ever seen two that looked quite the same. Congrats!
