So, for the backstory. Went to a friends and her boyfriend had try to build a paper patio in the back. Soon as I saw it, said how about we re-do this lol(this is the work I do) it was unlevel and water would shed right to the basement window. So next day we tore it up and realized it had not been dug out nearly enough. So lots of digging later I found a skeleton key. Gave it to my friend since she really liked it. Well all is done and we had a pile of dirt. I said mind if I detect the dirt? I found this dime and pictures are going to be hard to tell buuuut. I feel pretty confident that it’s the key date dime we all hope to find. It’s just very very rough shape. Let me know what y’all think. I circled the area I feel the mint Mark is. I know pics are the best but curious what y’all think.

It may be there, the pic itself is a little fuzzy.

First of all it’s a fuzzy crappy picture. Second of all, if someone knows what a 1916 D Mercury dime is, they know where the Mint mark is.

Ha ha, sorry for being a straightforward ass. We want to see a crisp clean photo of the stern of your coin. We don’t need you to circle where the D mint mark might be

I think I see what you are seeing, but I would have to say no it is not a D. It is in the wrong location. The D mintmark is closer to the branch and farther from the rim than the mark you have circled.

CONGRATS on a great find! If it is...it is. If it isn't there, it isn't there. It's worn like the '16D I found, so it wouldn't be worth a whole lot anyway. It's the THRILL of the possibility that you have found one. I hope you end up seeing a "d" under a jewelers loupe, but if not...just remember the thrill of the possibility it gave you. I have found several 1916's over the years, and the thrill NEVER leaves, as I slowly turn it over...hoping to see that "d" there. Only once was it there...and I'll NEVER forget it!

Congrats on being rewarded for helping correct the paver patio.
I have to agree with LCutler about the location though. The right side of your circle seems to be the location of where the MM should be and closer to the stem than the rim.

If you have a jeweler’s loop, you can put the camera up to the loop and take a photo. It’s not great and you may have to take a few photos and play with lighting, but it works.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

I hate to say it, but even through the blur and everything I feel this may have the "D" mint mark. I wouldnt put a penny on it until I saw ATLEAST a CLEAR pic of the reverse, but I think I see something there. I once saw a very poor condition but slabbed slabbed 1916"D" merc from pcgs or ngc and all that was really visible was the slightest remnant of the mint mark. Get a clear pic and pick up a jeweler's loupe... it's a must in our hobby at some point or another and they are super cheap! I hope you keep this updated. I'd like to see a clear pic of that reverse for sure! Great find either way, silver in the hole is always a good thing! Happy hunting!

This coin will need to see an expert in person, if there’s ANY question at all, which there is. Even if it needs to be lightly cleaned to expose a possible mint mark, it’s not a saleable coin without the buyer being able to definitively SEE the mint mark in question. You’ve got a good thing going with the front, now the back has to give up it’s secret, if it has a secret to give up...congrats on a neato coin and getting that patio straightened out!

Nice Merc. My favorite coin. Looks like it could be a D inside your circle.

Nice Merc. My favorite coin. I'm no expert, but why are you looking for the mint mark on the back of the dime?
That is where the mint mark is located on Mercury dimes.

Just a noob mistake. My 1917 has a W on the front. Just the remains of AW, the designer.
