In an old section of woods today I came across this belt plate:

I don't know much about military plates, I was able to find the design and similar items online and there was one found many years ago on TreasureNet

http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/my-best-finds/220844-my-eagle-buckle-real-not.html

If not a reproduction, dates to the late 19th century. If any of you guys know a way to confirm its authenticity please let me know.

Thanks for looking, HH,
Steve

Definitely not a reproduction, but a very nice find, well preserved and intact.

Excellent find ! I found the same plate, (except mine is stamped Brass) at an old homestead in Oklahoma. Steve in Pa also identified mine as Indian Wars. The one I found, is also my avatar picture.

Don't worry about it, it is a good piece, genuine as the day is long.

Hi Gunsil...just for my information, how can you tell it's genuine?

Cleaned up very nice BTW, just brushed with nylon and put a little Vaseline on it:

Thanks Wagbert for the banner vote, but looking up top there the bar is pretty high!

That thing is beautiful. I can only dream of finding something like that. Maybe someday! Well done.

First, the CW buckles have been reproduced, but I have not seen this model reproduced. I once had a huge CW buckle collection and have handled hundreds and hundreds of buckles. This one is die struck and the detail is outstanding, something a cast repro could not match. Many more of this model remain than the CW models, Bannerman used to sell them as army surplus in the early 1900s.
