I managed to do a quick hunt at one of our regular spots as the sun went down yesterday (at 4:30 in the afternoon :angry1:!). My very first signal was a faint 89 on the Deus, and managed a copper at about 10 inches. We've POUNDED this spot but I don't have to tell you guys how often there's a leftover or two.

Got home and cleaned it up a little and maybe it's wishful thinking but it looks like the shape of a Liberty Cap largie. I tried to photograph what I think I'm seeing:

If so, this would put the coin somewhere between 1793-96. I've been trying to get into the US 1700 Club for fifteen years, I wish I could know for sure! I'll keep at it, I'm sure there's a better looking one still out there! Here's another photo on the Red Book page:

Hope the season was good to you all, not quite over yet here in New England as long as the ground stays somewhat soft.

As I was reading your post I was thinking "I'm in the 1700's U.S. coin club... I've found a bunch of draped busts" Then I returned to reality: I've only found one with a date and it's 1803. I'll get there someday! Your find is definitely a liberty cap and that is an outstanding find! Congrats on it!

100% Liberty cap. The nose and brow are distinctive enough, but you can also see the denticles (edge ridges) and even the impression of the 'T' in liberty right where it should be.

Welcome to the club. :occasion14:
