Tombac Crotal Bell, 1881 CDN LC & a Ball Button

I met up with my buddy pepperj in Eastern Ontario earlier this week for a hunt. Pepper had just received permission to detect a site that supposedly had a house and a barn on it. As you can see from my finds, we only found the barn and never did find the house. My first find was an early ball button, followed by an 1881 Canadian LC and finally a tombac crotal bell. After 3 hours of searching for the house we finally called it a day, as I had a 2-hour drive home ahead of me.

On a positive note, this week I received permission from a local farmer to detect three homestead sites on his land. :thumbsup:

That green largie cleaned up really nicely. Congrats on the 3 new homesites you secured permission for. THAT was probably the true treasure today. Looking forward to seeing what you find!!

You got a good spot there, keep on it. Do you have any pat dates on the wick riser wheels. I found one similar to the lamp part there with the holes all over it, and it has 1862 on it. Does yours have that at the opening for the wick?

That’s a pretty sweet copper for being a farm field dig. Good luck finding the house if you are able to get back there [emoji106]

Thanks for your post washingtonian, the LC came out looking pretty sweet for being 138 years old.
I guess it wasn't exposed to enough horse urine to destroy it. :laughing7:

Unfortunately, with the 6" of snow we received yesterday the new permission may have to wait until the spring. :sadsmiley:

I too look at the patent dates on thumb wheels, as these are sometimes a good indication to the age of the sites.
One was 'P&A 1872', I pretty sure the other one was 'United States 1862'... so a #2 size '4-prong' burner and a #1 size 'flange/lip' burner. :thumbsup:

These were both flat wick burners, unfortunately they're very chewed up from the farm plows.

Yes, as you know when we find coppers on a 'barn site' their condition can be hit or miss. :laughing7:

Pepperj has so many detecting permissions in his area that we'll likely never get back there, but he may revisit it on his own.

Gotta love that Crotal bell, and that coin is beautiful! You also got an interesting variety of harness buckles, etc.

Is there a date on the wick adjuster wheel of the lantern?

I don't think I've ever found a crotal bell made of tombac metal before.
Most of the bells I find in my area are cast bronze.
