This is the second 17xx coin from a site Stew and I have been going to for a few months now,the property goes back to 1765 and Stew and I have pulled out about 75 silver coins, unheard of around here. We have yet to hit the woods, there has to be more.
Anyone know what it could be worth?
Thanks
CC

according to my blue book about $50 in VG $120 in F $240 in VF $700 in EF $ 1000 in AU and $2000 in Unc. keep in mind these are the prices a coin dealer might offer you for the coin. in reality, it is probably worth a good bit more. very nice find by the way! ;)

my info was for the pointed ray variety which i am assuming this is. (it looks like it from the photo)

Your coin appears to be a pointed rays 1785......at least from what I can tell. 2008 Red book price as follows

VG- $110.00
F- $250.00
VF- $525.00
EF- $1100.00
AU- $2000.00

If I had to guess...and I'm no expert, I would say your coin might make it to Good but probably no further than that. Still a great find. Congratulations. ;D

A few quick questions. 1. What was the other 1700's coin you guys got from that site? 2. How deep was that sucker? 3. What kind of signal did it give off on your machine?

Nice find, good piece of American History. As far as the coin goes, it is a good example of why proper cleaning is needed to identify the variety. The 1785 Pointed Ray type has several varieties and one is Common with the others either Rare of Scarce and of course that makes a big difference in value. (As Iron Patch pointed out)

However, after looking in some of my C4 catalogs on recent sales, I would say a ground found like yours would not be too desirable, but you never know. It looks rather corroded to me, but hard to tell from the photo.

Again, congrats on a good find and that should make a nice collection display coin for you.

Judging by the positioning of the letters in relation to the rays, this looks like a Crosby 3B, but tough to say for sure. 3B is the most common variety of the 1785 pointed rays. I would agree with Don, it would not be too desirable or of great value due to conditon, but what a great relic of the early days of our country! Congratulations on a great find!

Corroded, a little, that comes from being in the ground for over 200 years. I use a Minelab ExplorerII and this would be my 5th or 6th 17xx coin in 3 years. I'll be hitting the woods soon and hope to find more. Some day I'll find a silver that old and until then I'll keep it swinging. It sounded like the other coppers I've found, a high pitch with numbers just under a quarter, this one was about 10" down.I don't get too excited with these any more, it would take a seated or older for me to get some wood.
Anyway, I enjoy seeing everyone's finds and remember, keep it swinging
