Pewter? Spoon handle

I think it is pewter. Came out in two pieces (not my fault). I assume it’s old Based on everything else I find dates around 1830-40 aside from modern junk. I don’t really know. Also what’s the best way to preserve it cause it seems like it could easily crumble in my hands.
