My buddy and I found three civil war rifles that are in amazing condition. I need to know how to clean and preserve them properly or do I need to call someone who would want to look closer at these. Help me out.

There will be videos coming out on these finds next week on my youtube channel also. I'll keep you guys informed but any help on these finds would be most appreciated.

Thanks everybody.

It looks like they came out of the water. If so you might want to wrap them in wet towels to keep them from drying out until you can conserve them. Hopefully someone will chime in with the best method for doing that

KEEP THEM WET. I would go slowly, the cleaning will be much different if found in salt water. So, fresh or salt water find? Salt water will need to be submerged in fresh water for a few months, with frequent water changes. For fresh water, not so much but don't let them dry out for now.

Then I'd closely inspect them, still wet, get any loose stuff off and out of the barrell, hand pick off any easy rust pieces, and then do some research on how to finish them up. Wood will most likely crack a lot when it dries.

The best way to restore or preserve your finds is to use a reverse electrolysis method for rust removal
this really needs to be done by a professional, please seek out one, your finds are worth the effort. :icon_thumleft:

Nice finds! I don't know how to help with preservation but those are a really cool piece of American history.

Awesome Finds...! :icon_thumright:
And, as incredible as it sounds, these relics might be still loaded...!
Proceed with caution!
Keep them from drying out and in the dark.
And, WAIT for ALL the right procedures to use on restoring these guys...!
