Is this from a shipyard?

I actually found this yesterday while out detecting with the kids. Couldn’t stop thinking about it. Not super old probably from the 50’s or 60’s? There’s an abandoned golf course from the 50’s era so I’ve heard about 1/4 mile from the woods I found this in. The cable is like 3/4” diameter an this thing is heavy! Atleast 200lbs! Had to have been on a tow truck or something? Or possibly used to tie off a ship or barge at a dock?? I have no idea. Hopefully one of you here knows. Look forward to reading your input! Possible logging operation , does not look like any tow truck parts, i have owed many old ones from the 30/40 /50s

Hmmm... hard to tell, if I had to guess I would say that the lever assembly might be a brake of some sort, to slow or lock the pulley, but that’s all I got! Pretty cool though... I’ve been hunting off and on a site that had a sawmill on one side of the creek and a grist mill on the other, and have found super huge cables, nothing I’d be able to drag out by myself. Ddf.

Very interesting treasureman...are we looking at iron or is that bronze !! Heavduty cable brake of some sort...maybe ?? Who knows ?? Pretty cool and if its bronze brass or copper, and is as heavy as it looks...there could be good scrap value.

Possibly part of the winch apparatus from a skid stear used in logging operations. The lever being the engage disengage lever.

I’m going to check with the landowner to make sure he doesn’t care if I take it.. which I’m positive he doesn’t even know it’s there..I believe it’s just iron blak Bart. I’ll take it home an clean it up an post some better pics. Thanks all!

Well still don’t have it home.going to have a friend come help me lift it tomorrow. But this is as cleaned up as I can get it for right now until I pressure wash it. My uncles theory is that it’s actually probably from late 1800’s early 19th century. I really didn’t think it was that old! He believes it’s an old stump puller. It was mounted to something steady an a horse connected to the handle kept walking in a circle tightening until the stump popped out? Very possible as there’s field right near by. Pretty neat! Thanks for looking!

It’s definitely a stump puller. The round hole is where the beam would go through that attaches to the horse. The pin that attaches the lever goes through the beam to the cable drum and disengages the ratchet mechanism on the bottom of the drum. The hook on the heavy metal piece on the bottom goes to the anchor point. The cable attaches to the stump being pulled and coils around the drum as the horses walk around it.
Seen one of these at an antique tractor show. Slightly different configuration but mechanically the same.

Congrats on the cool and heavy find! You can definitely see where the cable fed and wound around the drum. Very nice Stump Puller!
