It was a much nicer detecting day with the sun behind the clouds & a light breeze, just how I like it.
With all this rain we had the ground was perfectly soft & we were getting those deeper signals.
This field is still producing the silvers....
Saw a WWII Hurricane fly over today. (bonus)
5 Hours of gridding:

5 Scrappies (1 plated imitation)
Livery Button (type I need)
Victorian Bedford Militia Button (type I need)
Medieval Casket Key
9 Lead Tokens (best 1 day total)
2 scrap bits of silver (from pipe stems)
Blank 17th C Token
Will III Sixpence (Love Token)
Ed I Penny circa 1280s
Charles I Half Groat 1635
Henry III Cut Half
Henry III Cut Qrter

Thats an absolute stunning field. Especially having it this time of the year. You have so many medieval finds, i wonder where the buckles are. To see and hear one of the warbirds fly by put a smile on my face. There are places in UK where you always have a good chance to see some.

It's a great blessing this time of year. We were hoping for 1 Roman Silver because the 2 we had out of here over the years were Hadrian & Traijan.
That probably won't happen now as were are running out of productive space but the surprise amount of hammered more than make up for it.
Yes, we are lucky to get the warbirds fly over pretty low on a fairly regular basis. Somethings practicing there tricks.

Gosh! It's always amazing to see how much you find! I like that key! What is the item next to it, the 3 circles?

Congrats!

That is a good question.
At first I thought it was a small 3-way strap-junction but I think I see a small break which may of made it a key. It has some age, at least 300 years old, but I'm really not sure!

A medieval casket key...how cool is that?!
I imagine you have a collection of those?
Not a casket in the way we think of a coffin...? An important box holding valuables? My wife pointed that out...why would a key be necessary for a coffin? :)
Always enjoy your posts Cru'!

When I have had the time to detect I always imagine something significant is occurring around me and that I'm completely oblivious to it because I'm focused on the ground...ie at the beach a whale swims by etc... I probably would have missed seeing the war birds. :)

Yes, got a lot of these 14th C keys.
The casket (small box) key id has been around for years in books.
But I spoke to a medieval lock expert & he didn't buy into it at all. Most locks other than German ones had a kind of push spring mechanism not a turn key one.
So what were they for?
I think they may have been a pilgrims religious item hung from the neck signifying maybe the keys to heaven (St Peter).

Always look forward to your posts Crusader, and always more than a little jealous. While I love to find 18th and 19th century coins and relics sometimes I wish I had your old fields over here across the pond. Congratulations on yet another unbelievable hunt.

Some nice finds there Crusader [emoji106] , could you take a look at my post Axe head?

I was hoping it maybe a small axe head? Probably isn't but it's such a weighty little thing I can't think what else it could of been.

Any help as always appreciated.

Steve
Welcome back I'll have a look now.
