Revolutionary War American outpost on site of American Indian Village

It doesn't get much better than this! A two-fer sale! General John Sullivan's tropps marched up the east branch of the Susquehanna River and destroyed 40 or so Indian Villages during the Revolution to keep things like the Cherry Valley Massacre and Wyoming massacre from happening again. The Indians fled to Canada, where many starved that winter as their British allies were overwhelmed.

So on this one little knoll I found evidence of an American encampment over the last few weeks.

IMG_1866.JPG In the road with the aluminum pops up this little George II halfpenny. NEVER listen to me and look in the roads or next to them, no I never said that. It's pretty well gone but has enough detail to identify it.

IMG_1867.JPG I found several points, since they are dirt colored they are hard to spot.

IMG_1870.JPG IMG_1871.JPG IMG_1872.JPG This is huge hand chopper ax, the kind the natives would use to crack open large bones, or coconuts.

IMG_1869.JPG Points all the from same day. Coin is for comparison for size.

IMG_1868.JPG

IMG_1874.JPG This rock is wild. Has an inside and outside curve to it. I wonder if the natives used it as a grinder or base to grind on, that is. Opinions?

IMG_1836.JPG Brass pieces from the other day.

IMG_1844.JPG Points from the week before.

IMG_1835.JPG More points.

IMG_1818.JPG Indian trade materials from the week before that.

IMG_1820.JPG The two silvers from that same time.

IMG_1825.JPG Earlier points (early June this year.)

IMG_1771.JPG More coolness, last of May.

IMG_1777.JPG End of May contact period items.

IMG_1778.JPG A few of the trade beads.

IMG_1779.JPG It was a good year for points - best one since 1984.

IMG_1771.JPG From Sullivan's camp.

DSCN0391.JPG Happy Man rock face from the year before.

DSCN0384.JPG Net sinkers.

DSCN0393.JPG Musket balls.

IMG_0405.JPG Rev war stirrup the day it was found.

DSCN0398.JPG Broekn linstock piece for a cannon.

But wait! There's more including grapeshot and cannonballs and buttons, but I don't know where those images are.

I guess you got the joke about the coconut.

ToddsPoint, you are right! Plus, as they were found only a few feet from each other I'd bet they could have been made by the same person. Exact same materials and style! Most of the points coming out of here have been on the smallish side, and A LOT have been intact! The size is probably why the plow spared them.

A couple years ago I got some flint ridge material from Ohio, when I went there. I tried to flint knapp - anything - I failed miserably. I wound up giving most of the chunky stuff away and just kept the knives, blades, preforms and the few points I found out there.

Wish...I...could...have...learned...to...knap. Oh well.

I am busy finishing a deck. I'll try to get a pic of the three almost identical points in one close up shot. I'm believing more and more they were made by the same person.

Well, the deck is done, the generator broke but now its fixed. Here's the grouping of the three points of the same material that look to me like they could have been made by the same person. IMG_1896.JPG

Thanks. With Covid I have only been to one of my three Virginia sites ONCE this year, and have really cut back. I have a new spot but it's knee high in winter wheat. One place I am eyeing is being dozed, so I'm hopeful there will be something there.

Thanks for sharing! We all know that before the Europeans reintroduced horses to NA the native just banged together two halves of coconuts.

FYI I went back last week and found a sinker, a piece of aluminum and no Indian artifacts. Corn is up almost knee high now and I only had a few spots I could get the coil on and the ground was so hard it almost didn't budge! It has to be worse now.
