I haven't posted in a long time but today is a day to post!. Went to a great new place to do some recon and boy did it pay off!. I didn't record it got crap pictures but sorry I was having a holy crap attack. Thought I had popped out a 1/2 reale so that always nice. Then I clicked the dirt hat off it and just about passed out. 1794 flowing hair half dime baby! Oh yea. IMG_20200626_164525.jpg IMG_20200626_140112.jpg IMG_20200626_140112.jpg IMG_20200626_164458.jpg

I still can't believe it. I just keep looking at it what's your guys opinions on getting her slabbed ?

I would only get it slabbed to affirm it is genuine. You already know it is genuine, but if you wanted to sell it, a buyer would prefer it slabbed. It would likely come back as "cannot be graded due to environmental damage" - basically what happens to all dug coins. If I found it, I would keep it as-is, but if it went into an estate, would be easier to liquidate if slabbed. I assume that my dug coins are either genuine, or in the case of some coppers, contemporary counterfeits. Either way, I see no value to myself to affirm what I already know.

Yeah it would only really be so if I kick the can and family needs to sell it it's easier.

That is an outstanding find!! HUGE congrats, those flowing hair half dimes are insanely hard to find, but yours being a 1794 is the rarer year! Congrats on banner, you deserve it!!

That’s indeed a once in a lifetime find , worth about a grand I bet .

I really have no clue what's it's really worth it's a LM-4 also but probably around a G-4 or 5 for detail it looks more scratched in the picture but it has no dings Ben's or deep scratches really just even wear and some tarnishing.

I was just about to get kicked off this site for verbally abusing another member, after your bit about using steel wool on it ! Trust me , there are people out there who would not hesitate to scrub that coin !! Big time Banner Worthy !! Congrats.

This is a coin that IMO, should always be left "as dug". The Flowing Hair silvers, and the half-dimes in particular, were not saved by the few collectors of the day. They were put into circulation and lost. They were often holed and sometimes repaired (is that better or worse than a hole?). They can have distracting adjustment marks from having a file dragged across the highest part of the obverse - the image of the allegorical Miss Liberty, at the mint to make weight. In addition, the mintage figures are for the coins struck by year only and not necessarily for coins bearing that date since dies were used until they failed, regardless of year. IMO, the smaller coins were more likely to be lost. Best to use the estimates of survivors. In any case, it is a rare coin, desirable in any grade.
