I had to dig a lot of brass shell casings before I found something good... but it paid off with a very nice Colonial (Shoe?) Buckle Frame.
Not sure why there is such a high concentration of shell casings in one field. I usually hit 2 or 3 times this many in this area.
Picked up a couple of live rounds too.
Nick

Buckle is late 18th century. Possibly post colonial

That buckle is a real beauty Nick! :occasion14:

It almost looks too big to be a knee buckle though, I've found a few of these in my area, but they were considerably smaller.
But I don't find enough buckles from this period to be an expert, maybe consider posting it in the 'What is It' forum for some other theories. :dontknow:

Here's one I found a few years ago,
Dave

Great finds! I hunt a spot that the National Guard used on occasion for field training. Tons of shell cases but I have to assume they were blank rounds. Since you found a live round, I’d guess someone was sighting in their rifle or doing lots of deer hunting there. Shotgun shells are everywhere around here but the old ones are still interesting.

That buckle is a beauty!

Hey thanks, Dave! I agree with you that it is more likely a shoe buckle. Here's a couple of photos of it right out of the dirt.

Buckles are one of my most favorite items to find when detecting. Congrtas to you!
Thanks, Silvermonkey - I agree, and they usually clean up very well!

Thanks, dts52! This field is literally littered with shell casings, and it's an open field close to the road. The woods beyond were commonly hunted when the area was more rural. A couple of years ago I found an ornate oval knee buckle frame in the same spot.

Beautiful oval buckle, Wildcat. I’ve only found a few buckles and I consider them some of my “best” finds (which isn’t saying much). I imagine someday in the distant future MD’rs will proudly hold up a pull tab and shout “Holy cow, look what I just found!” That is if I don’t dig them all first. I’m working on it. :BangHead:

Just wait 100 years, dts52 and I'll vote BANNER if you post a hoard of pull tabs... :laughing7:

Thank you, A2coins! There are tons more shell casings (and the guts of an old TV set) out in that field, and hopefully another buckle frame or 2...
