I found my first Indian head penny the other day. I have been searching for 6 months at several old sites but had not found one of these until now. Not finding much along the sides of an old brick sidewalk at a 1900 home, I started searching the sidewalk itself. A short time into the search I got a nice signal in the middle of it. Removing a couple of the bricks and pinpointing it about 2 inches down was a 1902 IHP!

Congratulations on your first Indian! It took me forever to find my first one which was many many years ago. I can still remember the same empty lot right next to the sidewalk in Oxnard Calif. The ground was rock hard, I thought it was going to be another zinc penny and I ended up putting a big scratch on the back, but it was beautiful to me and what a thrill:icon_thumleft:

I know you had a huge smile on your face, and now that you’ve broken the ice I see many more in your future. :occasion14:

I agree. Now that you know what they ring in as on the AT PRO,, you'll be digging up more of them. The early ones are made of copper nickel,, ( 1859 - 1864), so they will come on a little different. Congratulations on your first.

Thank you everyone for the kind words and encouragement. I was really expecting to see a wheat penny come up rather than the IHP...wouldn't have made sense really since the brick sidewalk was laid between 1900-1910 but you know how it goes. I am still over the moon with excitement about the coin! The wreath side was not as pretty but I am not going to complain. I did of course replace the bricks and actually did a pretty good job as I couldn't find the location right away when I was looking for it when I returned a couple of days later!

Nice on your first IH cent , I just found my first yesterday after nearly 14 years detecting ! Funny thing is, I have been ranting here on tnet about how you have to go to P.A. to find Indian Head cents , and sure enough , I got mine in a side walk tear out in Scranton, P.A. !

Congratulations on your first Indian Head Cent! I will never forget that hunt when I found my first. I thought it was a Wheat Cent until I got home. Something about the back was different...then I saw the oak leaves and the shield!!!

I've been metal detecting for years and barly found my first IH this year too. My neighbors house has been around since 1890ish and I've metal detected all over there. Finally found one near the surface after many hunts finding nothing there. Thinking of trying to metal detect under the house lots of broken old bottle bits under it the new part of the house was built on the yard of the original house.
