Another Brass railroad luggage tag found

This seems to good to be true. We headed out this morning and detected hard all day. One of the first holes of the day I dug was another railroad brass luggage tag. I couldn’t believe it. It’s the one thing I’ve been hunting ever since my friend kept the first one I found in his yard. We are still dumb founded as to how I’ve found this. We hear they are uncommon to find. It’s only the second one I’ve seen in person. The other tag is a Dog tax tag from 1962. The quarter I found appears to have been shot by a .22. The other coins are wheat penny’s. 1951,1930,1949,the others are too far gone to identify. The Winchester 12 gauge shell is a “Winchester NUBLACk”Thanks for looking everyone. Happy hunting.

The other Luggage tag

Here is the other tag that my friend has. We dug it up in his newly owned house yard. We had a railway collector guy look at it and he said you could easily get 500+ for this tag because it’s not like a normal luggage tag. He said it actually went to the engine itself. So that’s gnarly. He said a tag of that caliber is cream or the crop. I told him if he ever sells the tag I want it, I think I’m going to start collecting them, the ones I dig that is lol

RR luggage tags are among my favorite relics to see here--each tells a unique story. Your new tag is beautiful and a very unusual type compared to most I have seen. I was fortunate enough to dig one a few years back here in NJ. It's definitely one of my favorite finds. Congrats on the stellar find!!

So this past Christmas, mom and dad got me a bag of Lindor Truffles for Christmas. When I opened up the bag I noticed a paper towel inside. Unfolded it and there it was. My friend sold it back to my dad for 20$ and they gave it to me for Christmas. You have no idea how excited I was. This tag was looked at by a railroad expert and he valued it anywhere between 600-800$. I have no plans of ever getting rid of it. So far I’m up to 2 tags. They are a thrill to find.

I really like it when a random find becomes a favorite and than turns into a family heirloom. It is the best.

Parker & Karns City - Allegheny Valley. The Parker & Karns City RR was a small railroad that operated from 1873 to 1881 during the Pennsylvania oil boom. I have been told this is probably very rare and possibly the only one in existence.


This one is Atlantic and Great Western Railways from the 1860s

Since we're showing pics of our luggage tags... this is one my cousin eyeballed while doing some serious landscaping around his house. You should've seen all the bottles, crocks, and other relics he dug up! Unfortunately by the time I made it over the dirt had been pushed around so much that there wasn't much to find with the detector. Best find on the day was a wheatie.


I'll edit my post later with information on the railroad etc. but I've gtg now.
