Wow it's been awhile since I've had anything to post but my luck finally changed today. Went to a farm today probably a couple hundred acres figured I'd hit some of the hills to see if I could find an old house site. Well after about 4 hrs I had 1 fired Confederate bullet and 1 hill left to check. Once I got over to that hill I immediately got into iron square nails, exactly what I was looking for. After skirting around the edge trying to figure out how big an area it was about 1/2 acre I started to get into good signals 1st was a flat button then a few more feet later another flat button. Then I got a Confederate bullet that was smashed flat unfortunately I cut through it with my shovel. I then started to concentrate on one small area about 30ft by 30ft spot I was finding a bit of melted camp lead and a few brass odds and ends and then I pop out a large cent. Well after running out of water i figured I'd make 1 more sweep across. Well good thing I did after getting a solid hit on the xp deus I popped the plug and had a beautiful Confederate block I button staring up at me. After that I was calling it a day. I figure I have a couple of days worth of digging in that area.

Nice finds! I see that you are from Spotsylvania. I live about 10 minutes from the homesite of Union General Sedgwick. He was at Spotsylvania, the senior officer on the field. Minutes after chastising his troops for ducking from the Confederate sharpshooter fire with the famous words “They couldn’t hit an elephant at this distance.” he took one under the eye and died almost instantly. They have a nice monument where he is buried in the cemetery in Cornwall Hollow. I believe that he may have been the highest ranking Union officer to be killed in the war.

Glad you found the area that produced nicely for you. Gotta bet there is more in there waiting to be dug. Big Congrats on it all and especially the Block I.:occasion14:

Interesting story about General Sedgwick! I guess that falls under the category of "famous Last words!"

I’ve read that President Lincoln had the same bad habit when visiting the Union lines.
