Thought it was a plain rosette till I got home and a bit of cleaning revealed the beautiful eagle and shield which got my attention and then some! The perimeter is alternating acorns and crescents. I have no idea whether this is a military or civilian item, but will defer to the experts here. Unfortunately the perimeter is starting to disintegrate so some conservation is in order. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks for any info on the rosette.

N.B. that CannonballGuy has ID'ed this rosette as a "patriotic motif" civilian rosette from the first half of the 1800s.

Very cool rosette-congrats
Yes it seems to be needing some preservation for sure. Maybe a clear glue of some sorts-like Elmers? Wonder if a hot wax would be another option.

That's a great find, I've found similar eagles on buttons in the past. Congrats!

Guys seem to like the Elmer's glue and water, but I'm not sure how many parts to how many. Before I do it though I thought I might try to remove some of the crusty sandy colored stuff, but I'm a bit leary about putting it in hot peroxide. I tried a toothpick but it's slow going. Suggestions from you or anyone else would be appreciated.

Thanks for all the kind comments from everyone on this rosette!

50/50 water to elmers. That recipe was suggested to me by the state on preserving some of my stuff...

Thank you for the tip...I appreciate it. There is a piece about to break off the edge, but I might give it a peroxide bath to loosen up the remaining crud.

It got my heart pumping when I saw the eagle which was covered with dirt till I got home. Bridle rosettes are one of my favorite finds and even though not military, one with a patriotic motif is a rarity for sure.
