After a short change of scenery at the beach this week I returned to the woods for some relic hunting where the ground has not yet frozen...

My prize find of the hunt awaited me in the form of a Gene Autry Cap gun! :hello2:
Not to be outdone a crotal bell emerged from the ground. Unfortunately a chunk is missing from the side but it is a thing of beauty no less.

Happy New Year! :occasion18:
Nick

That's one Timex that took a licking, but didn't keep ticking! :laughing7: Great crotal bell--always a welcome find. Did u dig that cap gun? Looks to be in great shape. Does it work? I'd be tempted to load a roll of caps in it :icon_thumright:

Very cool finds, congrats!
Thanks, oldmxrat!

:laughing7:very cool
Thank, CRUSADER! I was happy to find a cap gun and even happier when it turned out to be what I consider to be the "Mother of All Cap Guns"...

Yes, Erik, the gun was buried about 3 inches deep in a loose, loamy soil with plenty of fibrous roots, and a layer of leaves on top. I was blown away by the condition! No luck finding the other plastic handle half though. I have not yet tried to open it to see if it will load. Maybe some WD-40 or 3 in 1 oil in the hinge?

Nice finds! The Gene Autry pistol reminds me of the cap guns I had as a kid back in the 1950's! Thanks for sharing with us.

That cap gun is cool, but I really like that bell, even with a missing piece. Congrats on the nice finds.

I had cap guns like that too, ArfieBoy but I don't know if they were fancy ones like this one.

Nice looking crotal bell and that really is the "mother of all cap guns"...unique finds.:icon_thumleft:
Thanks, Coinstar magnet, we all knew who Gene Autry was back in the day...

I agree, lenmac65. This is the best crotal bell, of this size, that I've found so far! My hope is to find a large, intact one someday.

Some of these guns pictured have the horse head grip like yours. This is from an old 1957 Sears catalog. Gary

Looking at the Fossil watch and on the dial says "50 meters", on the back "Water Resistant" :laughing7:

20210110_223107.jpg This is funny. My 90 year old mom found this one at a yard sale recently. Same gun with "Champion" on it instead of Gene. Looks like the hammer was destined to break. I guess it is the same manufacturer with a different take on the name. Autry made a fortune in royalties after WWII licensing out his name on a ton of products. My Dad was a radio station manager in the 50s and 60s. Autry came to visit the station in 57. I met him but have no memory of it. I was 4 years old. He was dressed in a suit and tie and my dad said I asked him where his guns were. I guess I was a fan of his on tv.

What a great story, DaChief. Too bad you didn't get a picture of the you with him that day to help remember the experience!
