2021 is off to a great start! I got my 3rd, 4th and 5th colonial copper of the year this afternoon plus a bonus Indian.
My first target was a clean signal in the pewter range on my Nox (12-13).. thought I was digging a tombac or a nickel, but it turned out to be what i believe is a copper farthing with “CATELL” stamped across the face. The reverse is wiped smooth. Im not too familiar with farthings but i believe the right facing bust puts it near 1730. Any insights on the “CATELL”??

My next good target turned out to be a 1902 Indian...

I moved a couple hundred yards to a little hill and got a fairly high tone on the Nox (29)... turned out to be a KGIi on edge... my fourth of the year... 1734?

My next and last good target turned out to be what i believe is another farthing... 1723
Hibernia

I am not very familiar with farthings and my references are limited to the
internet, so i would welcome your feedback... particularly any insight on the “CATELL”.

Thanks for lookin

Hi! Looks to me like a half-penny as opposed to the smaller fathings, but hard to see in your pic. Have never seen a counterstamped half-penny dug here. Outstanding finds!

The top one looks like a William III which puts it 1690s to very early 1700s!
Agreed, looks like a Halfpenny as well. The Counter-stamp makes it a nice keeper.

Interesting....I did a little more research and have some more questions.
The 1723 Hibernia is quite a bit smaller than the KGII so i assumed it was a farthing. It measured 25.6 on my calipers which according to my research makes it a halfpenny I guess.
Also, looking at the counterstamped “farthing”, I can definitely make out the GVLIELMVS (sp?), making it a William III as suggested. At certain angles, i think I can see a “6” where the date would be on the reverse as well. However, that coin also measures just shy of 26mm... making it too small for a William III halfpenny and too big for a farthing???
I am a total beginner here, so again, I appreciate any insight.
Thanks

Wear and time have taken the W3 down a couple mm's. Nice finds!

That is weird a farthing of Will III should be circa 23mm & a Half Penny circa 29mm, so your right its the wrong size. Which to me suggests a counterfeit Half Penny.

Congrats on the coppers, especially the counter stamped. I put them up there on the ladder of finds, as some have traveled many miles.
