So ive been detecting a forgotten farm field. Theres very little trash and 80% of everything that comes out is old. Toe taps, shoe buckle parts, a three ringer, KG2s, a half cent, 1880 canadian dime, 1859 canadian largie are examples of what ive found in this field so far. On sunday i got out there again with a couple friends. I also broke my phone sunday so thats why the late post. My first find was a piece of a toe tap, then a watch winding key. And then i got a jumpy +10 to +30 on my mxt. Didnt think much of it due to the jumpy lower vdi signals being decent targets. The field is overgrown with about 6 inches of grass and other plant stubble so good targets usually have jumpy vdis. One of my friends was near by so i had him go over it with his vx3 and he confirmed the signal. I dug it out and i finally got it in my palm. Dirt covering the shank and just enough of the back that i thought i was holding a hammered gold coin. I brushed the dirt away and it was a button. With a shine only real gold can produce. Flipped it over and found a very ornate front. Must be a very old button. Theres some kind of markings on the back. Not sure what they are and “gold button” isnt really giving me any results on google. If yall have any ideas let me know.

Then i dug a KG2 and a watch winding key from Canada!

We spent another hour and a half there without finding anything else notable and moved on. Which is when i dropped my phone in a parking lot and smashed the screen. Bittersweet day. Old gold button but broken phone.

I guess things even out in the end. Thanks for checking it out and Happy Hunting!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who voted banner! Its my first Banner ever and i was so stoked to see the gold button on the banner! Made my day! :hello2:

Also thanks to everyone for helping me determine it was a cufflink!

I spent another 6 hours in the field looking for the other one to no avail. Theres still a lot of ground to cover so im hoping its out there.

I dont think im going to acid test it. It came out of the ground shining and no corrosion or oxidation. The front is definitely hand carved and of the same piece. Its also not perfectly round. Ive found gold rings and other gold jewelry in the past and i have no doubt that its 100% gold. I intend to bring it to a local jeweler/antique guy to see if he has any ideas of the origin/mintmark.

Late to the party but big congrats on a super rare find.
Seems on the large size for a cuff-link but it seems a likely possibility.
All I can add other than you just don't find them is that its NOT British. The makers mark or sudo-hallmark must mean something to someone in the know, but not me....

Congratulations on achieving your first Tnet BANNER with that beautiful button find! :occasion14:

A few years ago, I found a similar watch winder retailed by a jeweller in Toronto, could be the same maker?
I had a number of customers based in Stratford, ON I used to get there every few months, a beautiful little town.

That is extremely similar! Maybe there was a common manufacturer. Possibly for when you lost your original key and needed a replacement? Just a theory that has no basis behind it.

I think it's a safe assumption these winders came from the same maker, especially since they were sold at retailers that were located 100 miles apart.
I found mine in 2017 at a long-gone homestead site in a farm field 40miles east of Toronto. The site dated from 1840 and likely burned in the 1870s.
Here's a view of the wagon road leading to the site and of the hilltop where the home was located.

Thanks very much for your response BeenFishin, best of luck to you.
Dave

Just throwing this out there. It reminds me of a British Flag Officer's button.

tudor rose button.JPG

I know CRUSADER says not British, but the resemblance is undeniable.

Wealthy officers often had uniforms and accoutrements custom made while on duty in the colonies. Maybe... ? :dontknow:

That said, the marks on the back look like Klingon to me. :icon_scratch:

Awesome dig!

I vote banner, (I didn't have to because it's already up there and I'm late to the show) but none the less I vote banner. If I were you I'd try to get those hallmarks IDed I have a feeling it could be epic what you find out? Just a gut feeling.
