So ive been detecting a forgotten farm field. Theres very little trash and 80% of everything that comes out is old. Toe taps, shoe buckle parts, a three ringer, KG2s, a half cent, 1880 canadian dime, 1859 canadian largie are examples of what ive found in this field so far. On sunday i got out there again with a couple friends. I also broke my phone sunday so thats why the late post. My first find was a piece of a toe tap, then a watch winding key. And then i got a jumpy +10 to +30 on my mxt. Didnt think much of it due to the jumpy lower vdi signals being decent targets. The field is overgrown with about 6 inches of grass and other plant stubble so good targets usually have jumpy vdis. One of my friends was near by so i had him go over it with his vx3 and he confirmed the signal. I dug it out and i finally got it in my palm. Dirt covering the shank and just enough of the back that i thought i was holding a hammered gold coin. I brushed the dirt away and it was a button. With a shine only real gold can produce. Flipped it over and found a very ornate front. Must be a very old button. Theres some kind of markings on the back. Not sure what they are and “gold button” isnt really giving me any results on google. If yall have any ideas let me know.

Then i dug a KG2 and a watch winding key from Canada!

We spent another hour and a half there without finding anything else notable and moved on. Which is when i dropped my phone in a parking lot and smashed the screen. Bittersweet day. Old gold button but broken phone.

I guess things even out in the end. Thanks for checking it out and Happy Hunting!

I think it only works the other way around. Find gold. Break something valuable. :laughing7::BangHead:Fortunately, i had an upgrade available.

Oh, I see. It must be like how all of the best silvers get hit by the shovel. :laughing7:

Nice finds,

It does appear to have the look of gold.

My guess is it's a worn out gold coin fashioned into a button maybe.

I'd have to acid test that one.

Thanks Jer, im pretty sure its gold but an acid test is in order. I am kind of thinking it may be an old gold coin due to the weird marks on the back. Ill have to do some more googling

I agree possibly spanish or foreign gold coin.

Be a good idea to weigh it also.

Very unique button. You just don't see gold buttons, but you do see the occasional gold cufflink. So cufflink would be my guess. How big is it?

Those may be the hallmarks. Try to see if you can find similar ones online or in a book or something. Can we have some close ups of them? If they are hall marks, they a little crud witch could mean that they are older.

Agree. IMO it's not a button, but a broken cufflink. Nice find!

Yeah button or cuff link that was not a reused gold coin. Great find no matter what.

I don't see anyone else on here saying this but considering it's what looks to be an 18th-century button made out of GOLD, I'm voting BANNER!:hello2:

Ok, i have some answers in the form of pictures. Heres a bunch of different stuff i had near by for size reference.

085F5FB6-B613-47A3-B1CF-B51C6F0D4FA4.jpeg

Heres a picture with a ruler. I couldnt find anything with cm but it looks like 11/16ths of an inch.

7F1F7F9D-4667-4675-AD0F-B3F8B062E213.jpeg

And heres a picture of it on the scale at 1.5 grams. For some reason the lcd screen didnt show up too well on the camera. :icon_scratch:

51627016-064E-453B-83F5-728D2709ED66.jpeg

I think it could be a cufflink but would like to think it was a button. Im also going to lean towards it being 18th century gold button. My reasoning is that 80% of the stuff found at this site is 18th century. Shoe buckles, KG2s, toe taps, flag buttons are just some examples i can think of.

Thanks for all the comments guys!

What makes you believe it's 18th C? :dontknow:

Based upon its “look” as well as the age of some of the other finds at the site I would agree mid-late 18th century.

Also heres a closer up pic of the markings and the shank. I think the shank was round and the mark is from Egyptians....so basically its an extra terrestrial gold button. :laughing7::laughing7::tongue3:

Based on the size and material, I'm even more sure you have a cufflink there. And probably 18th century
