If you're in an old spot, its not especially hard to find one that old. In coastal areas where there were WWII liberty ships, look for Roman coins.

I found several in the last few years. You have to be in a east coast area and on a very old site. Lots of the old sites have annoying cites, like New York on them! A friend of mine found maybe 15 in Virginia over a few years. Depending on the orientation, that "E" could be part of the cipher for "ER", Elizabeth Rex, but there isn't enough of the coin to tell. I have found two Elizabeth I shillings here in Maryland in the last few years. Don't know if I posted both or not. Both were in silver.

I like it !
SANTO DOMINGO, c. 1530-70, copper 4 maravedis, struck in Burgos, Spain. First coin of the Americas.

Assuming it is an authentic coin, I'll vote BANNER since it's historic value is most significant (and I don't remember seeing another on TNet).

You need to head back. The most likely states to find really early coins are of course the original 13. I have seen 17th century coins come out of western Pennsylvania before, but that is a rarity. Sometimes really old ones, especially French ones, can be found around the great lakes.

Mackaydon nailed it for you. Just think about that, it’s the first coin struck for the Americas! You were on a Southern site and I think you made a very significant find. I am voting banner for this. Congrats!!

This is truly unique; an example of one of the earliest coins found in the US. Voted Banner

Congratulations CD

Congrats on the oldie-the other half is probably still lurking in the soils. Like you stated time to open it right up and get back there.-Best of luck of the next dig.
