I’m still working the scout camp twice a week if the weather is fit. It is still freezing overnight, but it warms up above freezing for a few hours every day. That freezes the leaves covering the ground and sometimes a thin layer of dirt as well, but below that the ground is surprisingly still very digable.
My first trip this week I went to one of the summer camp sites to continue my grid of the site. In 6 hours of swingin the CZ21 I found 111 coins with a face value of $10.75, 72 camp tent pegs, sinkers, 2 bullets, 2 mess kit wing nuts, a dead case knife, a silver dime, a neckerchief slide, a tiny cross, 2 forks, a few tabs and miscellaneous trash.
The silver dime is a 1964D. That makes it a young thing of no great value, but silver is silver and I was very happy to start the count for 2021. Because the camp didn’t open until 1980 and most scouts don’t wear jewelry to camp, silver is a rare find and a very nice surprise when it shows up. The cross is tiny and thin with something in the middle. It looks like the remains of some decoration that was originally on the front but has deteriorated to the point where I can only guess what it was.
One of the forks is stainless and the other is silver plated. It is marked COMMUNITY, the original mark for Oneida flatware used from 1899 to 1935, someone took grandmas fork to camp and lost it. Most of the plating is still in tact so it looks pretty nice compared to most of the plated flatware I find.
On my second trip I went back to the weekend troop sites to see if I could finish the last 2 off. I did manage to complete them in my 6 hour trip with 169 coins with a face value of $10.78 (yikes, 103 were pennies), a key, a neckerchief slide, a bullet charm or pendant, a blank, a monopoly game can tab, a stainless spoon and fork, along with can lids, foil and an assortment of smaller personal tent type pegs in steel and aluminum left behind by the campers. The good aluminum pegs will be recycled to the scouts in my troop to use when they backpack. The steel ones will go in with the steel recycling.
The neckerchief slide is an older style that has a molded front and a fixed ferrous loop on the back instead of the modern adjustable tabs. Frequently the ferrous loop is rusted off, but this one is in good shape. The pendant was made from a 44 magnum casing and slug. The game tab is from a monopoly game running the 80’s I believe. I remember playing, but can’t put a date to the game and have not had much luck with my internet search.

That means it is from the United Pigeon Fanciers from a pigeon born in 1948. The H 930 identified the owner and the pigeon.
So another cold week of swingin brings a pile of gas money, junk to recycle, a few interesting things and one silver to sweeten the pile. Thanks for looking, stay safe and may your coil lead you to good things.
