I found this copper coin yesterday on a site that I found recently. Most of the finds have been mid 18th century. I've dug vent backs, pewter buttons, shoe buckles, cuff links and a George 11 among other things. This coin has the name DUNDAL inscribed on it with an RM 1767 above it. Could it be Royal Marines?

Royal Marines service records only go back to 1842, so hard to say if that’s what/who it is.

Could Dundal not be a person but Dundal, Ireland? It’s Dundalk but found several listings as Dundal while researching 1767 names, newspapers, etc.

I think it's Dundalk Ireland with a K on the end. This was found in New Jersey

I would think it's the partial of 'DUNDALK' too, and probably an Irish merchant's token. It may be stamped/engraved on a coin that has worn flat in circulation.

It won't have anything to do with the Royal Marines. Although they have a long history they went through numerous organisational changes and weren't given the name "Royal Marines" until 1802, largely at the instigation of Admiral John Jervis.

I know. I was just pointing out that a lot of 1700s, even 1800s dated articles referred to it as Dundal and not Dundalk so the RM may be the initials of a person to be researched...possible immigrant to the US?

You got a helluva site you're hunting there--give me a call if you want any help :laughing7:

My family is Scandinavian and Dundal to me sounds like a very typical Norwegian/Swedish/Danish name. Parts of NJ were settled by Swedes and I'd guess that's the direction you'd look, not Ireland which has many names stemming from the Vikings (probably including Dundalk). PM me if you want me to research the Scandinavian connection a bit further with my sources.

Ross Moor was one of several who petitioned an innkeeper for not allowing a candidate to hold a meeting at the tavern, though it was promised and numerous vowed to not frequent the inn again. He wasn’t one of the candidates but was a Lt. in a Dragoon Regiment.

Is it copper-coin material? It looks like pewter in the photo. I hope it gets solved. It's a very interesting object.
