This time my iron was an IRON!

It was fun exploring an old homestead dating back to the 1700s and still in use....It seems the hunt produced items from the 1920s or so...but it was my first flat iron! I rather liked it but it was heavy to drag around...8 pounds heavy! I couldn’t find any other markings or info. about this rather plain iron...and was surprised that the handle was also iron...iWould have thought that would get hot....unless there used to be wood around that part and it is now gone...but then why would “8” be on the handle if it was covered by wood?




There were several old car items around....Waltham Watch Co. 8 days movement I think was found in a model T Ford. Next to it in the photo is part of a rouge compact.

Oil can (I think) but I don’t see how oil came out unless it’s squished. Also I don’t know what all the white crumbly stuff is on the underside of the can.


i posted in “What is it”...as I found what looks like a strange horseshoe...never saw one like this going completely around.


I also found a few unidentified bottles (except for Vick’s Vapor Rub-blue). I kept some pieces if broken green glass as it looked like it might be uranium glass..and it was..It glowed under UV light.






Well, no buttons or buckles or coins but it was still fun!

Nice finds Wonder. I like that Flat Iron. I have never found one with the handle still on. The closed end horseshoe had a few purposes. One, was for a working horse in the mud, and on ice. The closed end, helped to keep them from sinking to much. I also like that Ford Grease cap. Nice relic finds for you.

Thanks, Coinstar! Bottle collecting is new to me so I don’t know a lot about them except these were interesting shapes and screw top so newer. I haven’t found a good way to identify them yet.

I am a sea glass hunter too so that’s how I learned about the Uranium glass. Your question about safety is a natural and great question. It is safe to touch and use but apparently the kind of uv light used to make it glow could be more of a problem...and never shine it directly into eyes..

Thanks, Trezurehunter. I guess having an iron handle helped keep it intact. I can’t find any information on this model of iron but am astounded by how many kinds of old flat irons were made.

The closed end horseshoe was so interesting to me too. Hmmmm ice and mud....That’s an interesting additional piece of information and makes sense. Also being therapeutic is interesting. I could use a therapeutic shoe like that for beach combing. I can walk north all day long but when I walk south (FL east coast vacation) the incline of the south direction wreaks havoc on my left hip and right ankle. Killer. If I could somehow lift my left shoe height only when walking south I could stay more aligned! Anyway..I digress.

I have a Ford Fusion so smiled when I found the Ford...Grease cap. Thanks for refining the name.

Glad you enjoyed the info. about uranium glass. If you want to read the various posts about the horseshoe...check “What is it?” forum....but basically used for better mobility for either terrain or orthopedic support. Interesting and got nice feedback!

This was my first iron, so I am pleased it has a handle now that I hear from so many that they are often found without the handle....and the bottles I am just starting to learn about but am almost afraid to collect as my metal finds are getting to be numerous and need space [emoji6] Thanks for your comment.

I'm very impressed by the variety of finds there! That iron is in great shape and it is lucky that the handle was iron and didn't rot away. The Model T hub cap is another nicely preserved recovery!
