Congrats!
Please don't take this the wrong way but have you eliminated the possibility of a later copy? Always important with rare buttons.

Good one! Can you show us the source of the button info? We have found many N.C Sunburst Buttons and are interested in the info on this button.

It’s listed in the N. C. civil war buttons book by c. Terry Teff.
The book I have was printed in 1998 and listed only one dug example and two non dug buttons known to exist at that time.

Very interesting button! The button is very close in lettering characteristics to the North Carolina pine tree Civil War button. The stipple dots around the lettering are very similar too. The NC pine tree button is a holy grail button for collectors and diggers. The center rays look more like a sunburst as you say. The star pattern looks similar to the pine tree button which has 5 stars on bottom.
