Well Guys and Gals, i have been metal detecting for over 25 years and this is the first time i have posted anything i have found. and this web site help me ID it, so i had to join to tell you. Sunday 02/28/2021 I went detecting with a couple of friends, we had hit a site earlier and did not find much, so try an area we have been to a lot and just about hunted out, but there is still some things there but it has just got to be your day to find something. Had a couple of targets but pulled regular old brass shot gun shells and buck shot. I am using my old trusty Nautilus DMC-IIB, love that machine, had fallen tree where the roots were pulled out the ground, so like always check where it pulled out the ground. nothing there, making my way back to my friends as they are moving off from me. Got a signal, well thought to my self after just digging three shot gun shells, that it might be another. dug it and so a copper disc, of course i am getting excited, i start yelling my friends names, trying to get them to come back as none of us have found anything up to this point. but seeing the disc, i knew it could be a large button or a large copper coin. The sight has been know to get some King George coppers out of there and tomback buttons. Still not seeing my friends, i started getting dirt off the item. I saw a head facing right. we if you know about KG coppers some face left and some face right, this one is facing right. on the face of coin it read: George King of Great Britain. So i am calling my friends on my cell phone, you need to get back to me quick, i have got a KG copper. My friend said i will be there in a minute to help you ID it. He has found some before, most of mine of clipped, so not whole coins, but this one is whole. I clean the back a little, and i saw no date but one the back instead of what you normally see on a KG copper, i had a figure with a drawed bow and arrow and a deer with a tree and shrub. So my friends came back to where i was, i was jumping up and down and my friend saids i know that smile. He looked it and said i have never seen one of these before. So he posted on his facebook to get some help. So we detected more in that area and worked it a little need to go back. but did get a cannon shell fragment and i found 2 musket percussion caps in one hole and 5 ft away my friend dug one also. but it was getting late and park was closing so had to leave. One of my friend that was not with us, posted on Dan's facebook page, a link so we click on it and it turns out that this is King George I Indian Peace Trade Medal. It was made between 1714-1727 and doing research on the item some have been found from MI to VA, but none no further south that Virginia. and they were giving to the 6 main tribes which their were Indian tribes in this area, but were all driven out by 1808 according to history books. As far as I know there is not a number on how many were made, but ANS Digital Library Medal in America, there were 19 looked at. There are some in museums, and some rare collections. My oldest piece to this was a 1748 Spanish Reale, but this goes back further for me. Still have not made to 1600's yet, but still looking. I will post pictures of this and then the link to the ANS article so you can get a little history about this piece. Medal 1.jpg medal 2.jpg Medal 1.jpg medal 2.jpg

It is alot of detail, considering the age. i have see a lot of coins come out of the ground and have to try real hard and to try to get a date. Looking at the information i found on it. i posted link. that there were three Obverse and 6 reverse, and the think mine is the Obv III and Rev F. which the Obv I the King George was a lower relief, and Obv II a little higher and the Obv III had the most detal. and they still to this day know if was hammered or screw press. they are thinking screw press... other than environmental damage, it is an AU find. it is missing the loop at the 12:00 oclock position. Hey just adds to the history. Thank you

I just wanted to give you an update on the medal. When i was trying to ID this medal. The is a auction house that had two of these medals in the Donald G. Patrick collection part I of this collection closed last night and the total sale was 4,750.299.00 dollars, but the auction i was interested in was the George I Indian peace medal. He had one that was a dug and environmental damage but still AU condition, similar to mine. Then had a second one that was non dug graded as VF35. I watched this auction just to get an idea what my Medal may be worth. Because in researching a non dug with gilt medal sold in 2009, for 41,000.00 and from the Ford collection they had three one sold at auction for 5500.00, one for 3500.00 and one for 1300.00 all in 1986. the 1300.00 was very worn, could barely see any detail. So they had an online auction, but also had phone in auction and mail in auction, which closed last night. but i got an email last night around 11:00pm say that it had closed. The dug medal sold for 7200.00 the non dug medal in VF condition sold for 5520.00. At least i have an idea now. I am speechless. In my 25 years of digging up shot gun shells, buckshot, alum and iron, hoping for a coin, ring or button, i never would thought about this piece. Sorry just had to share. Great save!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is why we do what we do. It's not about what we've already dug, it's about what we have YET to dig.

There are, apparently, at least four varieties by weight:206, 277, 291 and 378 grams) as noted in my reference above in post #6.
What is the weight of your medal in grams? Maybe you have a 5th variety?
Don......

i have not weighed yet, i am planning on getting graded through NCG, i do know there are three different OBV and six different REV and i have the OBV III with REV F. According to "The Medal in America" book through The American Numismatic Society. but that is me guessing. i don't have a scale to weigh. That would be good to know.

Could you update the thread once you have it graded?

Great find. It has me wondering who held it last? Was it a prized possession or tossed aside in disgust...or both.

I will, and i wondered same thing, when we IDed it, found it between two old towns one settled 1663 and other settled 1723, and they are saying it was the Siouan Tribes in this area at that time. and in the same area was the Tuscarora, which were part of the 6 Tribes, and you had the Tuscarora Wars in the area 1711-1712, this medal was made during the reign of George I, 1714-1727 and then the Yamassee war with tribes south of us 1715. So you are right was it lost, or was it discarded in disgust. The loop was off of the medal, but as you know with flat buttons, they will break off.
