Yesterday I had the opportunity to detect a house for 3hrs that was recently vacated by the tenant. This beautiful c1850 β€” 55 fieldstone house is slated for demolition later this year by the land developer. The house has been continually occupied for the past 160+ years, so modern trash was plentiful here. The first interesting find was the decorative pendant, based on the design, I’m thinking it dates from 1910 β€” 20. I also dug a 1916 Canadian LC, a 1928 Dog Tag and several US Wheat and Canadian Pennies from the 1940s. The painted mother and baby figure has a threaded metalcore, but what it was attached to I do not know. :icon_scratch:

Thanks very much for looking,
Dave

Congrats on a nice day out....I love that little tank. I used to get annoyed digging all the match box, hot wheels, and all the little toy cars. Then my son was born and he loves it when I bring him the cars...got him a die cast jet fighter the other day !!
Thanks for your post Bart.
I love digging early toys as well, but finding a plastic tank from the 1980s wouldn't be my first choice. :laughing7:
Hope you and your family are doing well these days,
Dave

It would be a sin to take that house down.
What's it's gone it's gone .
I hear you my friend, it's definitely a tragedy when history like this can be saved. :sadsmiley:
The problem here in Ontario is, there are very few laws preventing developers from simply pulling these buildings down to make way for development.
What we need is to have laws with incentives put in place for developers to restore these buildings, then to be able to resell them for a profit to folks who appreciate history like myself.
Best of luck to you in MA,
Dave

Great haul Dave - congrats !

Thanks very much for your post E-Trac.

Dave, wow good haul for 3 hours! Wonder what another 3 hours would yield? You've spoiled us with another great write up & pics. Some developers incorporate old homes into new subdivisions where I live. Wouldn't hurt to suggest that to them.

I'm planning on heading back on Sunday morning for another shot at it, but this time I'll grid more slowly in the opposite direction. :laughing7:
There's also a foundation of a c1850-60 house in the woods that has recently been cleared by the developer, I tried to detect it last fall but there was too much foliage on the ground.
Your suggestion regarding "developers incorporate old homes into new subdivisions" is exactly what should happen, but probably never will... two words 'government politics'. :BangHead:

Dave, you read my mind about swinging more slowly in the opposite direction. Heck, if you have time, also try along diagonals. GOOD LUCK:occasion14:

Yes, most old homes get the wrecking ball. The owners of two in my area have denied my request to detect there, despite my offering to provide a signed injury waiver. Such a shame to loose that history before we have a chance to preserve it.

That's so disappointing when you're denied permission to a property where the house is going to be demolished anyway. When I do approach a homeowner, which is rarely, I'll offer to give them any gold or silver jewelry I recover. I usually tell them that I'll give them everything I find, all I'd like to keep is any coins to help pay for my batteries. The mention of giving them any gold or silver jewelry usually wins them over... and I don't use batteries, I run a Deus, but they don't know that. :laughing7:
