My New Oldest Coin!

Hi Everyone,

I revisited the farm field potential house site I have been working on, which I had found my previous oldest coin, a 1724 Wood's Hibernia coin on Friday and found what I thought at first was a King George III Half-Penny. The writing on the obverse did not have III Rex, so I was confused, but the bust was facing right. Something clicked in my memory from some YouTube videos and I checked King William III half-pennies and I believe that is what I found. The coins were made from 1695-1701, mine appears to be a 1701. This was my first find of the day, within the first two minutes of starting the hunt, and my only significant find of the day.

Thank you for reading.

Happy hunting!

Josh

That is an outstanding coin Josh. To uncover a William III in such great condition is very rare in my book. Always nice to see a fellow Mass hunter do well!

Nice indeed! I’m jealous of you guys back east where everything is so much older! My oldest coin is 1892. Keep it up!

The golden age of piracy was starting around that same time on account of the wars of the Spanish succession. This coin was likely in circulation for this very historic and epic period in world history. Black Beard, Black Sam Bellamy, Captain Kidd, would all all make their debut. 1701 was actually the year they executed Kidd, so its spot on with that event.

Lots of age on that coin, and the condition is better than what's typically encountered. Congrats!

I've only seen a couple dug and they were in much worse condition. That's a good one. Congrats.
