Mglentz, you made it talk. Excellent find and thanks for sharing all the research. Definitely worth a banner vote! Congratulations!

An unidentified coin is a piece of metal. An identified coin is a piece of history.

Shomin, John Harbor Springs g.s.w. left forearm $4.00 May 1877

This shows he started getting a $4.00 per month pension in May 1877 for a left forearm injury.

That IS one heck of a find there "mglentz4125" of Harbor Springs. My Great grandfather, a Sgt. William Tresise from the U.P.'s Copper Harbor, was in the 27th Mich. Vol. Inf. and was in the same battles as your Mr. John Shomin. Bill Tresise was wounded at "The Crater", and spent the next year in a hospital before being discharged. A Great find you have there, smashed or not. You just never know.

Fantastic recovery, that’s a find of a lifetime. You may have found the only one that can be traced back to the soldier it belonged to.

Banner vote is in. This artifact along with the superbly reserched information and photographs would make a very attractive museum exhibit.
Let history be your treasure map .

I'm guess the g.s.w. is short for gun shot wound.
