Checked out an old homestead site today...First silver of 2008

Well, I would not call it a hunt. It was more of a scouting mission. I have not gotten out to detect yet this year so I took advantage before the snow came through this afternoon.

I had an all day business meeting to get to this morning, but the route took me near a wooded area that shows up as a homestead on an 1859 map. I only had about 40 minutes so I grabbed my Ace 250 with the intention of searching for the cellar hole or some other sign of the homestead, such as iron or old trash.

I found what appears to be a privy hole or a well (how can I tell the difference?) and some old stones which indicate the home was nearby. I dug the 1963 Rosie and the 1930's or 40's GM Key near the privy, which leads me to believe the site has not yet been hunted. It is always nice finding silver, even if it is not a particularly old coin!

I will keep you posted when I return to the site, however with the forecast calling for more snow this weekend it might be some time before I return!

The hole is lined with bricks, so I guess it is a well? As far as the key goes, GM used those blanks from the 1930's through the mid 60's. This one says Briggs & Stratton and the letters "RP". The logo does not appear to be the modern GM logo, which has been around since the early 1960's.

As I stated, niether of these finds excite me very much by themselves, however they lead me to believe that the site has not been hit, at least not thoroughly.
