My son did good, dear ole dad did BLAH........(Two seperate hunts, both of us not together)

For years this one site was off limits and finally that has changed so I paid it a visit today and was surprised the area was so big BUT once I saw Cinder block foundation and no indication of "Jersey Stone" type rock foundations, I knew it was a more modern homestead. I hunted for about an hour here and got lots of junk readings and typical of sites that were occupied in the late 1800's up to WW2 it was loaded with trash, bottles, tires, old tin cans. It just was not my type of area to hunt but yet it was very open. I only got one good target near the house site and it was what I think is a old toy gun. It is made of pot metal in my opinion so most likely a toy, gee, it would blow apart I think if it could be fired! Anyway, it has nice decoration on it so I thought perhaps it was one of those mini pistols that ladies would carry.......

So, my site was the Blah site. But my son on the weekend did a tad better that I did today. He found an old homestead but even by our standards it was a bit newer than usual. However his finds were rather spectacular compared to any of my recent hunts. I cannot remember the last time I got 4 old coins in one hunt in recent years, yet alone THREE old silver coins.

At least he is off to a good start this winter and but l still have that 1723 King George I to my credit in January.

My son found at this site:
1781 Spanish Half Real
1850 French 20 cent
1857 half dime
1863 Indian head cent

He thought for sure the French coin was another half dime, you don't exactly expect to find a silver French coin in the middle of nowhere!

Don

Nice work! 1781 seems to be the date of the week! Congratulations, Don. I've been on those skunk hunts too. House sites usually have at least one coin, even if they're newer ones. And of course, scouting is never a bad idea--one more place to mark off the list. Congratulate your son for me!

Well, I am 100% sure of what the toy gun is, a "Bat Masterson Derringer Belt Gun" :) circa 1959? :)

Some info from Googleing it:

Bat Masterson Derringer Belt Gun - Seems to have caused a bit of a problem for some boys playing with this gun. :o

Cool finds, Don!

The coins are super, but I really like the gun. It looks very old.

Nice post and pics.

Thanks for sharing.
