Found My First Cache, 2 Coconuts & 1 Dead Rooster !!

Weatherman got it wrong again. Instead of 2 days of snow and sleet we thankfully only got 1 day of rain. Most of the snow washed away and temps were above freezing. You know what that means
right. Yes,(before the temps drop and the ground freezes again), I headed for a popular sledding spot I've been eyeing, in search of some lost booty. I had a ball picking up small pocket dumps at the bottom of the hill, not much digging, mostly freshly dropped coins on the surface. A Quarter here, 30 cents there, 70 cents over here, a set of keys over here, I just kept giggling as I went along gladly picking up the shiny trinkets. I thought I had scratched my itch enough to start scanning my way up the hill and back towards the car.

While scanning around the top of the hill I noticed something to my left, between a couple of trees. So I went to check it out. Hmmm, a small coconut and 2 plastic grocery bags with something inside? . As I got closer I could see brand new coins sticking out from under one bag. Whoopee!! I thought, as I picked up the bag and more coins fell lout. Then another coconut? :o :o UH-OH.. I had just stumbled upon someones voodoo ritual. I stood there staring down at all the change and thought what to do ??? ??? ?. Well being that I only believe in the almighty lord I decided to ignore the hokus-pokus stuff and I began to fill my pouch. The bag apparently had already been opened,(there probably had been some more money in there), but the person must have gotten spooked and dropped it before fleeing the scene. Not me!, I grabbed every shiny coin. ;D Also in the bag was some sort of a mango paste, brown feathers, small pieces of different colored fabric, a piece of lettuce all wrapped together in tissue. And 2 small white candles. Oh yeah and the other bag, hmmm, these rituals usually involve some sort of a sacrifice right?. I really didn't want to see what was in that bag, as I poked it, it didn't feel like it contained any more coins. Something larger, heavier. So I started to walk away.. Curiosity killed the cat right, I just had to know, by the way I hoped it wasn't a dead cat. So I picked it up and made a slit in the top with my digging tool and saw all the brown and black feathers and the smell of death. I didn't grow up on the farm but I know a dead rooster when I see one.

OK that's enough, I decided to get out of there but not before calling my wife to let her know what I had found, you know just in case something happened to me right. She said I would get bad luck,
but what does she know. I hung up and made a bee-line to the car with my loaded pouch. All together I came home with 130 coins; 9 quarters, 17 nickels, 40 dimes, 63 pennies, 1-2001 Trinidad & Tobago penny, and a set of keys. Total of $7.73. I left the rooster and the coconuts but the smell of fruits and death followed me home. OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH.... Is the boogie man gonna get me tonight?

Wish I had my camera at the time. I made a scanned image of my first cache after I rinsed the mango paste off. Sorry no photo's of the rooster or the coconut mango potion...

Harry.

Re: Found My First Cache, 2 Coconuts & 1 Dead Rooster !!

For most of 65 years I thought all this Voodoo type stuff & curses was a bunch of hooey. Until we camped at a certain State Park out west.

For reasons I won't go into here, park rules determined that rocks, etc. should not be removed from certain, sacred areas. We were not camped in one of those areas. The next morning, while walking my little Poodle just behind our developed/numbered campsite, I picked up & pocketed a small, multicolored rock. We left shortly thereafter. Wife commented that my new find looked rather strange.

Cut to the chase...Within the next three (3) weeks...

1) A rehabilitated, "wild", Golden Eagle in another S/P mistook my wife for it's benefactor & my poodle for a "feeder" rabbit & tried to take all 6# of pooch off to the mountains...She's OK now, but $150 vet bill, scars, & some anxious moments.
2) My wife broke a tooth that had been capped in 2003. Broke it in a Mexican restaurant...on a tortilla chip. $2500 to fix it.
3) A DUI teenager attempted to pass us on the right, residential area, in the AZ sand, lost his hot-dog Honda trying to get back on the pavement, crossed in front of us & crashed...drove THRU the front door of an occupied apartment. He was running in excess of 60 in a 35 zone. We missed each other by less than 25 feet.

I boxed up the "rock" & sent it back to the State Park! Enough is enough.

Snow dragon, what churches are you talking about that have Gold crosses?

All the ones I have seen since I was a kid were Polished brass, even in the Catholic churches.

Don't worry about it keep the loot and go find more.
jave fun with your hobby and relax a bit.
If those voodoo doing people out there don't want us taking the money...
they should stop doing voodoo where we MD

Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion. I would have left the site intact and not taken the coins. Here is my reason behind that. I don't practice voodoo but I feel like anything like that, whether it is a spell, incantation, ritual or a prayer is sacred to the person that put it there. To me it would be like going into a church and taking a cross because its made of gold. Rituals are preformed as a means of asking a higher power for help. Being voodoo in nature does not automatically mean its evil and subject to the finders keepers rule. If this post offends anyone ,I'm sorry and just say the word and I'll remove it.

Snowdragon thanks for your opinion you are certainly entitled to it.
I would never ask someone to remove a post.
That would be censorship in my eyes.
Well here's my response which I also am entitled to.
Any religion that MURDERS innocent animals and leaves there carcass's behind a tree to rot where kids can stumble on it is just cruel and inconsiderate to other park-goers. Why don't they do it in their own back yard??.
These people murder goats, chickens, roosters, etc. And don't even at least eat it.
Just the other day someone left a half dozen dead chickens, fruits and coins all over the beach in Corpus Christi, Texas. The D.A. there didn't agree with that and they are seeking the culprits for prosecution.
Sorry I have no respect for people who practice witchcraft not religion.
How could you compare this to stealing from a church.??

Snowflake one more thin I want to add. The murder of innocent animal's for use in so called religious rituals is ILLEGAL and not tolerated in most states, as well as to animal welfare groups and animal lovers like myself.
Picking up items like coins in a public place is not.
Don't mean to go off on ya, I apologize if you feel that way Snowflake.

My apologies to Snowflake who has PM'd me on the decision and reason for retracting the post.
Apparently one issue that was raised was that this would turn into a religious debate.
I can understand that. Though I explained that it would only make for interesting discussion on the ethics of metal detecting.
I'm sure no one here would intentionally offend or disrespect another Tnet'er. Topics such as this one usually generate a lot of comments made in jest. But it also brings out interesting stories, opinions, and experiences. And isn't that what we are really all about here.?
Sorry Snowflake.

Wow Barguy that was a good story. Makes you wonder was it coincidence or was it really a curse? Sometimes we associate a streak of bad luck with some sort of evil whammy, or curse. Not saying that was your case.
But I've had weeks where my dog was almost killed, wife or me involved in auto accidents, definately had a filling pulled out or chipped tooth at a diner. At the time if I had something to blame it on,like stepping on a crack or walking under a ladder,I would have used that as an excuse.
Did you find the rock in one of the sacred places? You know there is a difference between disturbing a site used for black magic and a site where people may be or have been buried or were killed at.
Glad the doggie is okay..

NYC...

No, the rock was found at a numbered/designated campsite. Chances are, it was a piece of petrified wood. We had recently visited the Petrified Forest & there they forbid picking up ANYTHING under supposed penalty of some type of curse/bad luck.

We ASSumed that the run of bad luck followed the petrified wood...wherever.

Yes, I've had runs of extremely bad/good luck over the years, but this was spooky!

Thanks for your interest! ;D

Natman, now theres an idea I really like. I thought of going to the casino and sticking it in one of them slot machines. Or better yet, letting it ride on #13 of the roulette wheel.. ???
I figured that ritual was some sort of a request for money from their gods, maybe it will bring me some money. ;D ;D He-He-He.......

It's been a couple of days since you posted this thread. Just wanted to make sure you were still alive ;)

For the record, I would have taken the change too... I don't believe in that stuff, God is in control :D

Hi Joe G,
You are right about that, brother.....
And yes I'm still alive and kicking.. Nothing bad has happened..
At least not "strange and unusual" type of bad...
Only problem is my wife is spooked now and has made me take my coin jar, with all my finds in it, to the back of my Jeep and doesn't want me bringing it back in the house, EVER !!!  >:( ??? ::)

( this is a spoofing Jest as well woth a positive note ) have a good laugh over it!~
