Thanks to Don in SJ (for giving me the specs) and for JC for weighing and measuring I can confirm that the George I coin (1723) is a halfpenny and not a farthing like I thought...The weight and size is right for the halfpenny...Here are a couple of new photos....I am afraid to clean too hard on a coin that old...

Congrats on finding such an early King George II copper with a readable date! I have found many King George Coppers but all except two are so corroded that you can't read the date. The two with dates are 1737 & 1738, so you have me beat. WTG!

Congrats on your find, it looks like a Halfpenny and not the Farthing, judging the size with your fingers :)

Halfpenny , roughly a tad over 1 inch in diameter
Farthing , roughly .9 inch, so just a bit under

Cool find! I'd like to find something that old. It's in great shape too for being 285 years old! 8)

Bravo to you! That's a beautiful coin. I'm still on the quest for King George...

They're a tough find here in Kentucky.

Re: Found my oldest coin to date!!

Great coin still in great shape for the age. Woould you mind sharing some tech. 411 about your XLT? I have an XLT and I am still faily new using it and still fairly new at detecting as I just started detecting in Dec 07 and got my new XLT about 3 weeks ago. I was wondering how deep the target was and aboput what did it ring at. BTW I am in VA and was told this is a dificault place to metal detect due to the veery unfavorable groound conditions. Thanks for any help. Just a great dig, congrats.
