Another Seated Liberty From The Field....1853 Half Dime & Old Lock
Back to the field today. Decided to start in an area that I've randomly hunted before, but never seemed to get any good old signals. But I said to myself, if they were dropping coins 100 to 200 yards away in the other part of the field, someone had to drop something in this section. I swear to God not 10 minutes after I began hunting, and I think my second signal, I got an iffy penny reading at about 4 inches. Pulled the plug and saw this tiny disk lying in the dirt, that at first I thought was a button, but as I picked it up, I felt for a shank, and was relieved when I couldn't feel one. I then knew it was a silver coin and thought I had found my second Trime (3 Cent Piece), but was even more psyched to see it was an 1853 Seated Liberty Half Dime. This is the third Seated coin I've found in this field. Most of you know the other two are an 1877 Half Dollar & an 1877 Quarter. The Half Dime has a scratch on the obverse, that I thought I might have done while recovering it, but I really don't think I did it, because I use an small 26 inch garden shovel to cut wide plugs, and I think the blade of the shovel is too thick to have made such a fine scratch - but you never know. Also found this cool old lock, which is marked Romer & Co.
