I FOUND THIS DEPUTY SHERIFFS BADGE WHICH IS ABOUT 3 INCHES TALL BY 2.5 INCHES WIDE AT 11 INCHES DEEP. I THINK IT IS A HAT BADGE. I LIVE IN RI AND CANNOT FIND ANY LIKE IT ONLINE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE IT A PROPER ID OR AGE. . I ALSO FOUND MY FIRST SILVER RING WHICH I WILL POST WHEN I HAVE MORE TIME ALONG WITH A 52 QUARTER I FOUND WHILE HUNTING WITH MY BUDDY JPS. SORRY ABOUT THE PICTURE QUALITY AS I HAD TO SCAN IT BECAUSE MY CAMERA IS OUT OF COMMISSION AT THE MOMENT. OVERALL IT WAS A DECENT WEEKEND. THANKS FOR LOOKING. HH

Nice find. The badge does look very old. I would not be able to guess as to how old it is.

If it's real and not a toy, chances are good that it is from the county you found it in. I would hit up the local sheriff for some history, possibly the local police benevolent association, or possibly other police related foundations in that county. Someone will probably know what it is...

On many of the police badges, the center seal will be of the State which the town or county is located in. That center seal kinda looks like Maryland, but I can't be sure.
That may be another was of tracking it back.

Great find !!!

Maybe you can get a good magnifying glass and check it out. I would have to agree that the chances of it being from the original area are pretty good.

You find the department and someone within it will either know or be able to point you in the correct direction as to it's age. And if it isn't too old you might get a personnel complaint against an officer removed from their record as it is technically no longer missing.
