I have recently found a few buttons that i will describe , as i dont have a digital camera yet. They

appear to be brass , aproximately 7/8 inch diameter, two piece - ( domed front crimped onto back-

loop and manufacturers letters on back ) The fronts all say US INDIAN SERVICE , with an eagle in

the center. The backs have the following makers marks : MARK COWEN & CO NEW YORK,

HORSTMANN PHILADELPHIA, and FINE QUALITY. Each button has one or another of these

makers marks. I dug most of them in an old park here in Santa Fe , that sits next to an old Indian

school. They all rang up as dime or quarter on my MXT at depths of 1 to 3 inches , 3x6 DD coil,

6x10 DD coil , relic mode , trigger forward , disc at 0. Gypsyheart , if you can find any history

on the US INDIAN SERVICE , I would be most grateful . Button experts any help on dating as

regards the different makers marks would be welcome indeed. Thank you one and all !!!

Gregory, Santa Fe.
