Thats a good find. Congrats. Some people might think it was a padlock hasp. Keep lookin". Who knows what else might show up.

They were worn on the shoulders on the outside of the uniform, supposed to help protect them during cavalry clashes although I don't see how it would afford too much protection from a razor sharp saber... to me they seemed to be more symbolic...

Yes, they would provide no protection vs a saber.

although that was their original purpose... CW officers sometimes wore them made from wool for asthetics... these were used before the ACW...

as an side. I learned to always double check the hole after digging, as the main part of the epaulet was still buried even after i found the underside/attachment piece
