I found this button last night at 6 inches from the 1836 homested I have started to hunt. It says, Scovill MF'G
Co. Waterbury.
Did some research and found it to be an 23mm overcoat button

I found it near the 1866 indian head penny that was in such good condition. The soil in front of the house is kind of rich in color and is easy to break apart. It just crumbles in your hands. It must be really kind to metal objects. With all of the recent rain, it was not wet or muddy. Nice soil to dig in compared to where I live.

Awesome find! Nice Pics  Sounds like it is rare and the condition is far better than any other that I have seen dug from this era. Congrats! ;D

Yes very nice, each time I find something or the machine beeps or makes a noise, I think to myself, just maybe it is the big one, no matter where you look or hunt, you never know who has been there before you.

Well done my friend.

Re: Found this Civil War Button last night.

Thanks fellow members. I had no idea what I had found. I thought it was a newer button until I entered the info on the back. I live in central Ohio and that is exactly the way the button came out of the ground. This little town had a lot of civil war veterans for as small as it is. Less than 1000 people live here. The Pennsylvania railroad used to run right through the middle until PennCentral went bankrupt in the early 80's. My father told me today that this place is the oldest in the town (I already knew that) 1836

Yep. Better remaining gilt than the best one I've dug. That's an excellent find! When you're on that old house site, and you get that two-piece button, it gets your blood pumping! Sometimes you just look at the shape of it and know that it's either an Eagle or Military Academy button.

Good Stuff.

Re: Found this Civil War Button last night.

With all of that guilt left I was sure it was some more modern. I had no idea what I was pulling out of the hole. I need to slow down a bit and be more careful. I could have damaged that but I am using a small trowel now instead of that big backhoe I was using early on. Thanks buckleboy and digginman
