Because of the size of the OLD bills, wallets back then were carried in inside jacket pockets near yer chest area. Some people actually called them old bills..." HORSE BLANKETS "

yep old GOLD STANDARD dollars when a buck was a buck~~~~(pre 1933)~~~~~ they were big jokers no doubt about it --still folks liked their silver dollars back them---lots of folks being burnt by "paper money" in the civil war did not like paper money they wanted "real" money --gold or silver-- many folks refused to take paper and insisted on silver / gold money in payment--- thus the term "legal tender for all debts public AND PRIVATE" were put on paper money -- forcing "real money" folks to accept them in "payment" for debts.

Thanks for posting those pics. I didn't have a clear recollection of what the oversize dollars looked like.

I had a distant relative who was a Michelson (sp?), one of four or five sons of a Michigan 1880's lumber baron. On the occasion of his marriage, each son got a million dollars (this was in the early 1900's). When they changed the money to the smaller bills, he had a troop of relatives line up in the basement of his house. As with our MPC (Mil. Pay Certificates / 'play money') in 'Nam, you could only change over a certain amount of money. Mr. Michelson made each relative sign for a sum of $$ that he took out from behind some bricks in the basement. Don't know what each person got paid to change over their chunk.

I wish I had had some contact with that branch of the family.
