I've got it soaking in olive oil, how long do you think I should leave it there? A week?

I would leave it for a couple of days anyway, and then gently clean it with a soft tooth brush and some dish soap to get the olive oil off. You can actually use a soft brass brush if it is really crudy. The brass would not scratch the copper. HOWEVER, never use that on a valuable coin, (like a 1793 chain cent)...Lance

Great coin. Where'd you find it? How deep?

Post another pic when you get it cleaned.

It was in the village in a back yard, about 5 inches deep. The house I would say is about c.1900 or so, but the village was incorporated just about the year of the LC, 1817. I didn't expect to unearth this date!
