Seems the right sort of period, I think it could be as early as 1795. I have a few & I think this ones an Officers type.

I found one in Albert's button book. Take a look at page 88, button 11B. It says they are from 1761 - 1807. A fairly rare find. Nice going.

My answer earlier was from the top of my head & I thought it from the 1790s

Here they are thought to be late 1780s. NB. The rope on yours is going left but the ones on the site are going right. I checked the 8 or so in my collection & they all go right other than some smaller types which are going left but don't have the boarder around the edge. Don't know what this means?

Looking in Albert's book and look at the photo of the reverse, see part of a backmark that makes the button appear more to be a 1790's button or later. The fouled anchor rope starts on the left side, being closer to Albert's 13A button which has a backmark of Hammond Turner & Dickinson. It is more possible of it being that button than any other one I have seen in the book, of course there are always variants not listed.

If it is a Hammond Turner & Dickinson, the dates could be as early as the 1790's or up to 1820, but with the style of the button, I will lean towards the middle of 1790's after the Navy was authorized again to start up after being disbanded after the Rev War(approx 1785), and the authorization was given in 1794, so most likely the earliest the button could be is 1795 at best.

Old Navy buttons are great to have in your collection..

You and your buddy, Iron Patch, are GREAT at locating those long-forgotten military buttons. I would love to add a few of those little buggards to my collection.

Keep on hunting with that Colonial fever, buddy!
