1796 Draped Bust Found Sat.

Well I got a signal today that said 5-6" and I plugged about 5". Could find nothing in hole - so I thought must be in plug. It was at about 3"
in the plug. I used my coin probe to find it in plug. And I was pretty tired at this point.
Thinking, well just another one of those rusted quarters I've was digging all day. Not being very careful with probe - it scratched coin. As soon as I felt it's weight and saw the image on coin - I knew it was not a quarter.
I rubbed off dirt and saw the unmistakable figure of a 1790's coin. Man was I happy! It is a 1796 Draped Bust Copper!!!!

Hey Ocean, nice find. This is what I have been doing for cleaning of the copper coins, works pretty well if they are not a valuable one. Mix olive oil and liquid detergent and rub onto the coin. Use a soft brass brush and with a circular motion go over the coin. Wash with hot water and put on a coat of past wax. This seems to work well on the older coppers...Lance

Take a look at my posting under this category, It has been a great week. The bust large cent and half cent were cleaned that way, although they were found in a dry area and were in a bit better shape. If you would like better pictures, send me your email and I will send you some more...Lance

Nice coin, I have been there and done that. Scratched a c oin or good find before after digging all day long trash or modern.

You have me beat by 35 or so years. My oldest coin to date is a 1831 large cent.

Yes that is a good reason to use a good electrical probe to help keep from hurting what you found, but even though it's a great coin and congrats to you for it.

and used the wrong tool at the wrong time. It happens. Thanks!

I may have it professionally cleaned because it's 208 years old and looks like it has good detail under that black patina. Any comments on this from someone who has actually done this - I'm all ears. Thanks!

Half Cent

Nice find Ocean. Went to sisters house for dinner took detector on a whim ended up finding 1805 half cent. but alas, I put a scratch in it with the shovel when digging it out.

mrdoug61 - well ya know it just happens sometimes. The thing this coin made me realize is that you really never know how old the next coin you dig will be. This holds true esp. in any area that was part of Early American settlements. IE the 13 colonies. I was told no one ever lived on this property prior to 1900's. It was farming field. So you wonder did the farmer lose it while plowing the field? Ya never really can know but the imagination gets a good workout thinking about it.

Not sure if this was hacked or the database got fouled up on this site between 2004 and 2021. I don't even recognize any of the stuff above this post being displayed as my photos. Strange.
